How to get from Istanbul Airport to Taksim, Beyoğlu and Galata

May 2025 by Tarkan

8 May

Istanbul’s central neighbourhoods, Galata, Beyoğlu, and Taksim, flow naturally into one another, creating a lively, walkable area that blends history, culture, and urban energy. While Galata and Taksim are a little farther apart geographically, all three are part of the broader Beyoğlu district and easily connected by foot, tram, or metro. If you’re staying in one of our heritage apartments, chances are you’ll explore them all on foot without even noticing you’ve crossed from one into the next.

Whether you’re arriving for your first visit or returning to explore more, this guide will help you choose the best way to reach your destination from Istanbul Airport (IST).

Spacious and modern — Istanbul Airport’s impressive interior.

Taxi from the Airport – The Most Direct Route

Best for: Travellers seeking a fast, door-to-door option without needing to navigate public transport.

Taking a licensed taxi from the official airport rank is the most straightforward choice, especially if you’re carrying luggage or arriving with family or friends. The taxi area is clearly signposted and located just outside the arrivals hall.

Yellow taxis are standard, turquoise taxis offer a slightly more comfortable ride, and black taxis are the premium option. All are metered and regulated.

Estimated travel time: 40 to 60 minutes depending on traffic

If you’re heading to Galata or Beyoğlu, the taxi will take you into the historic centre. Taksim Square is also easily accessible via this route.

Tip: Always use the official taxi queue and avoid drivers offering rides inside the terminal.

Private Transfer – Pre-Booked Comfort

Best For: Guests wanting stress-free arrival and local help

Many of our guests love using a pre-booked private transfer. Your driver will meet you in the arrivals hall with a name sign and escort you directly to our apartment door.

We’re happy to help arrange this for your arrival, just let us know your flight details, and we’ll do the rest.

Average journey time: 40–60 minutes depending on traffic

Bonus: Especially helpful if you’re arriving late or traveling with children.

Havaist Airport Shuttle + Taxi or Walk

Best For: Budget-conscious travellers looking for a balance of price and comfort

Havaist is Istanbul’s official airport shuttle service, offering large, comfortable coaches with luggage compartments and free Wi-Fi.

  • Take the Havaist bus to Taksim Square.
  • From there, it’s a 10-15 minute taxi ride to Galata.

Journey time: ~90 minutes total

Metro + Short Walk – A Modern & Budget-Friendly Choice

Best For: Adventurous travellers with light luggage who prefer public transport

Istanbul’s new M11 metro line now offers a direct and efficient connection between Istanbul Airport (IST) and the city.

Here’s the updated route:

  1. Take the M11 Metro from Istanbul Airport (İstanbul Havalimanı) to Gayrettepe – this is a non-stop express ride with modern trains and luggage space.
  2. At Gayrettepe, transfer to the M2 Metro heading towards Yenikapı.
  3. Disembark at either Şişhane (perfect for Galata) or Taksim (ideal for central Beyoğlu).

Journey time: ~65–75 minutes
Tip: Buy an Istanbulkart at the airport and load credit before boarding.

This route is now significantly more streamlined than in the past, thanks to the M11 line opening. The trains are new, clean, and a very efficient way to reach the heart of the city.

Our Local Tip for a Smooth Arrival

We always recommend letting us know your arrival time in advance. Whether you’re taking a taxi, shuttle, or private transfer, we’ll make sure someone is available to greet you and help you get settled quickly into your apartment.

Once you arrive in Galata or Beyoğlu, everything you need is within walking distance: Cafés, restaurants, historic streets, and local boutiques. These neighbourhoods are not just places to stay but they’re a true Istanbul experience.

Which Area Is Best for Your Stay?

While all three areas are well-loved and closely connected, Galata stands out as the ideal place to stay and it’s where most of our apartments are located.

Galata offers a unique blend of history, architecture, and intimacy. With its cobbled streets, beautiful old buildings, and the landmark Galata Tower at its centre, the neighbourhood feels both peaceful and culturally rich. It’s perfect for guests who want to feel like they’re living inside Istanbul’s story, not just visiting it. Small artisan cafés, boutique shops, and views over the Bosphorus make it endlessly charming.

Beyoğlu is just uphill from Galata, with more of a modern edge. It’s lively and youthful, filled with galleries, bars, and contemporary culture. A great area if you enjoy being in the middle of the action, especially near Istiklal Street.

Taksim is known for its energy and transport connections. It’s the city’s beating heart, great for shopping and convenience but less atmospheric than the historic streets of Galata and Beyoğlu.

All three areas are easy to walk between, but for the warmest, most authentic experience of Istanbul, we think you’ll love Galata the most.
